Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is the direct sequel to Final Fantasy XIII-2, part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis: Final Fantasy series. Intended to end the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy, it features Lightning as the main protagonist. The game takes place five hundred years after the events of Final Fantasy XIII-2 and shows Lightning in her final battle against a new deity while saving the souls of humanity in a doomed world heading for destruction.
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will conclude Lightning's story and follow her quest to save the world as it will end in thirteen days. The game takes place five hundred years after Final Fantasy XIII-2 (in the year 1000 AF) and Lightning will enter the final battle against a fate brought about by a new deity.

When the divine deities disappeared into the Unseen Realm, the mythology of crystals came to an end. People were reborn into the new world and stepped foreword into the future. Even if there are times when we wander in darkness and tremble in the night, we will keep working together and continuing our bonds. As we hold hands, we will change the warmth between them into hope. And we will live on this planet. The Legend of Crystals, the story before this planet was born. The story before you were born.
